Pavers & Hardscaping for Phoenix Homeowners

Phoenix is where AZ Pool Concepts does a large share of its hardscape work, and the city asks for two very different kinds of paver jobs. In the older central and north-central neighborhoods, we spend most of our time pulling out tired concrete around pools that have been in the ground for decades. On the newer edges of the city, the yard is often bare dirt, and the deck, patio and walkways all go in for the first time.

We install travertine, porcelain and concrete pavers for pool decks, patios, walkways and driveways, and we build each one on a compacted base graded to move monsoon water away from the house and the pool. Owner Shawn Walker has more than 18 years in the trade, and our family-owned crew handles the demolition, base work, layout and cleanup ourselves. Old Concrete Decks and Bare New Yards Across Phoenix

Central and historic Phoenix neighborhoods are full of 1950s and 60s homes, and many of the pools behind them still have their original concrete deck. By now those slabs tend to be cracked, patched, or separating from the coping. Replacing them with travertine is the most common paver request we get in these parts of town, because the stone runs much cooler underfoot than bare concrete and gives the pool a clean edge again. Mature trees bring roots to cut back and soft spots that need fresh base, and narrow side yards mean base rock and pavers often come in by hand.

North Phoenix, Laveen and Estrella are a different job. These are newer subdivisions on former farmland and desert, and plenty of the backyards have never had a deck, patio or path. That gives us room to plan the whole layout at once: a pool deck that steps out into a shaded patio, a walkway along the side yard to the equipment pad, and a slope on every surface that carries runoff toward the yard instead of back at the slab.

Caliche turns up all over the city, from Ahwatukee to Deer Valley. When we hit that hard, cemented layer during excavation, we break it out to the depth the base needs rather than setting pavers on top of it, because caliche drains poorly and traps water under the surface. When a deck is part of a pool build or remodel, we fold it into the City of Phoenix permitting and inspections we already manage.

Common Pavers & Hardscaping Projects in Phoenix

Concrete-to-travertine deck replacements

Our most frequent Phoenix paver job. We remove the old slab, check the coping, rebuild the base and set travertine around the pool, which stays far more comfortable for bare feet in July and ends the cracking and settling the old concrete had.

First-time decks and patios on newer lots

In North Phoenix, Laveen and Estrella we often lay out the pool deck, patio and paths together on a bare yard, using matching pavers throughout and grading every surface so storm water heads away from the home.

Walkways through tight side yards

Older central lots usually have a narrow strip between the house and the block wall. We build compact, well-edged paths there for the trip to the pool equipment or trash cans, carrying material in by hand when the gate is too small for machines.

FAQ

Pavers & Hardscaping in Phoenix: Questions

My central Phoenix pool still has its original concrete deck. Is it worth replacing?
If the slab is cracked, settling or separating from the coping, replacing it with travertine or pavers usually beats patching or recoating. We'll look at the deck and coping on site and tell you plainly which way makes sense.
Can you get equipment into a narrow Phoenix side yard?
Usually, by scaling down. On tight lots we use small equipment and move base rock and pavers by wheelbarrow.
What do you do about caliche under a new patio?
We dig through it to the depth the base requires and haul it off. Leaving caliche just under the base traps water, which can lead to settling after monsoon storms.
Which paver material works best for a Phoenix pool deck?
Light travertine is the most popular because it stays cooler and grips when wet. Porcelain suits modern homes in a light, textured finish, and concrete pavers offer the most color and shape options for the money.
