Pavers & Hardscaping for Scottsdale Homeowners

Scottsdale backyards tend to be finished to a high standard, and the hardscape is usually where that shows first. Most of the paver work we do here is premium travertine or stone decking around custom pools, along with patios, entry walks and driveways that have to suit the architecture of the house.

AZ Pool Concepts designs and installs those surfaces from Old Town to North Scottsdale, McCormick Ranch and Gainey Ranch. We help you choose material, finish and pattern with samples in hand at your home, and we coordinate the deck with the coping, spa and any ramada or outdoor kitchen so the backyard reads as one plan. Our family-owned team is led by owner Shawn Walker, who has more than 18 years of experience building in the Valley. Reach us at (480) 241-9708 for a free consultation.

Rocky Ground, Grade Changes and HOA Review in Scottsdale

Ground conditions change a lot from one end of the city to the other. Old Town lots are compact, so a deck or patio project there is mostly about fitting good material into limited space and getting it through a gate. North of the 101, the soil turns to decomposed granite with buried boulders, and it is common to hit rock while digging out for a paver base. We remove or break that rock rather than building over it, because a hard spot under the base eventually shows up through the pavers as a hump.

Hillside and view lots bring their own planning. A deck that wraps a negative-edge pool facing the McDowells has to account for the fall of the land, and we pay close attention to where runoff goes during a monsoon storm so it is directed away from the pool and the house rather than across the stone. Where the grade drops, we use retaining walls, steps and landings set on solid bases so every level feels stable to walk.

Most master-planned communities here run design review, and DC Ranch, Grayhawk and Troon require HOA architectural approval before work begins. Front-yard driveways and entry walks face the street, so expect the committee to look closely at material and color. We assemble the specs, samples and layout drawings they ask for. On luxury remodels of 1990s pools, the original deck often comes out along with the dated finishes, and we replace it with travertine or porcelain chosen to complement the new pebble interior.

Common Pavers & Hardscaping Projects in Scottsdale

Premium travertine pool decks

The core of our Scottsdale paver work. We set travertine in French pattern or clean modern layouts around custom pools and spas, add matching bullnose coping, and seal the stone so splash-out and hard-water marks clean off easily.

Hillside steps, landings and retaining walls

On sloped and view lots north of the 101, we build paver steps with even risers, level landings and retaining walls that hold the grade, so the deck, patio and lower yard connect safely.

HOA-approved driveways and entries

Concrete paver or travertine driveways and front walks for homes in design-review communities, with the samples and drawings your HOA needs prepared alongside the construction plan, and pavers chosen to suit the street view of the home.

What Our Customers Say

FAQ

Pavers & Hardscaping in Scottsdale: Questions

Do I need HOA approval for pavers in DC Ranch, Grayhawk or Troon?
Yes. These communities require architectural approval before work begins, and we prepare the design package with materials, colors and a layout for the committee.
What happens if you hit boulders while digging out for a Scottsdale deck?
We break or remove the rock so the base sits on consistent ground. Building over buried boulders leaves hard spots that later show up as uneven pavers.
Is travertine or porcelain better for a contemporary Scottsdale home?
Porcelain gives the crisp, uniform look many modern designs call for, as long as you pick a light, textured outdoor finish. Travertine stays cooler and has natural variation that suits warmer, more traditional architecture.
Can a new deck be matched to my pool remodel?
Yes. When we replace dated finishes on a pool, we choose deck and coping material that complements the new interior, and we can carry the same stone into a patio or walkway.
