Custom Pools for Scottsdale Homeowners

Scottsdale homeowners tend to come to us with a clear picture of the pool they want, and it is usually an architectural one. Clean geometric lines, an integrated spa that spills into the pool, a negative edge facing the McDowell Mountains, premium stone on the deck. AZ Pool Concepts designs and builds those pools from the first sketch through the final inspection.

High-end work leaves less room for error. Coping has to line up, a spill edge has to run dead level, and the finishes need to look right in full Arizona sun for years. Shawn Walker has more than 18 years of pool construction behind him, and AZ Pool Concepts is a family-owned, licensed Arizona ROC contractor serving Old Town, North Scottsdale and the communities in between.

Building on Scottsdale Rock and Hillsides

Ground conditions in Scottsdale depend on which side of the 101 you are on. North of the freeway, the soil turns to decomposed granite with boulders buried in it, and excavation can mean hammering or removing rock before the shell takes shape. We build that time into North Scottsdale schedules. Compact Old Town lots are a different problem, where the challenge is fitting a well-proportioned pool and spa into a small footprint without crowding the house.

Hillside and view lots bring grade changes that affect where a pool can sit and how it is engineered, and the City of Scottsdale gives sloped lots additional review. Those same slopes are what make a negative edge work. When the yard falls away toward the mountains, the water appears to run straight off the edge into the view, with a catch basin below collecting it. Getting there takes a structural plan that accounts for the grade, plus extra time in permitting.

Active HOAs run most of the master-planned communities in Scottsdale. In DC Ranch, Grayhawk and Troon, architectural approval is required before work begins, so we put together the HOA design package along with the city submittal. Not every Scottsdale project starts from dirt. We also update 1990s pools with modern pebble interiors and automation, and when an old layout no longer suits the house, a full redesign can be part of the conversation.

Common Custom Pools Projects in Scottsdale

Negative Edge Pools on View Lots

On sloped North Scottsdale properties, we design negative edges that frame the McDowells, with the catch basin, structural work and grade changes engineered together. Expect extra design time and hillside review with the city on these builds.

Integrated Pool and Spa

A raised spa that spills into the main pool is a common Scottsdale request. We match the spa coping and tile to the pool, size the heater for cool winter evenings and put both bodies of water on one automation system.

Premium Stone Decking

Travertine and natural stone decks finish most of our Scottsdale pools. Stone stays cooler than concrete underfoot and suits contemporary and desert-style homes alike, and ramadas or outdoor kitchens can be planned into the same layout.

FAQ

Custom Pools in Scottsdale: Questions

Do I need HOA approval for a pool in Scottsdale?
In many communities, yes. DC Ranch, Grayhawk and Troon require HOA architectural approval before work starts, and most other master-planned neighborhoods here have design review too. We prepare the HOA package along with the City of Scottsdale permit submittal.
Can you dig a pool in the rocky ground of North Scottsdale?
Yes. North of the 101, decomposed granite and buried boulders are common, and we use rock removal or hammering when the excavation calls for it. That can add time to the dig, so it goes into the schedule from the start.
Does a hillside lot change the permit process in Scottsdale?
It does. The City of Scottsdale applies additional review to pools on hillside and sloped lots, and the engineering has to account for the grade. We handle that submittal as part of the project.
How long does a luxury custom pool take in Scottsdale?
As a rule, longer than a simple pool in a flat suburb. HOA review, hillside permitting, rock excavation and detailed features like negative edges all add steps, and we lay out that sequence with you before construction starts.
