Custom Pools for Phoenix Homeowners

Phoenix is a big city to build pools in, and the conditions change a lot from one part of town to the next. AZ Pool Concepts designs and builds custom in-ground pools for Phoenix homeowners, with the shape, depth, spa and water features planned around the yard in front of us. Owner Shawn Walker has spent more than 18 years building backyards in the Valley, and every project starts with a free visit to your property.

A Phoenix pool has to work in July. That means light interior finishes that don't bake, equipment sized for long summer run times, LED lighting for evening swims and a deck that won't burn bare feet. We pull the permits with the City of Phoenix Planning and Development Department and run the inspections, so you deal with one contractor from layout to the first fill.

From Mid-Century Lots to New Phoenix Subdivisions

In the central and historic parts of Phoenix, homes from the 1950s and 60s often sit on generous lots with mature trees, which gives a custom pool plenty of room once you get the materials back there. Getting them back there is the hard part. Side yards are often narrow, so instead of driving an excavator through, we plan for a conveyor to move dirt and a pump truck to place concrete. We also look at tree roots and canopy early, since a big shade tree affects where the pool goes and how much debris ends up in the water.

North Phoenix and the Laveen and Estrella edges are a different job. These newer subdivisions were built on former farmland and desert, and many backyards there are still bare dirt or rock waiting on a first pool. Access is usually easier, so the design conversation turns to how the family wants to use the yard: a Baja shelf for small kids, a spa for the cooler months, room on the deck for shade.

Caliche shows up all over the city. It is a cemented layer of calcium carbonate that can be nearly as hard as concrete, and when the crew hits it, digging takes longer. We talk through what caliche could mean for your schedule before the dig starts. We also build in Ahwatukee, Arcadia, Desert Ridge, Moon Valley, Deer Valley and the rest of Phoenix.

Common Custom Pools Projects in Phoenix

First Pools in Newer Subdivisions

Bare backyards in North Phoenix, Laveen and Estrella get a full first build: pool, Baja shelf, optional spa, travertine or paver decking and a plan for shade. Laying it all out together keeps the deck, drainage and equipment pad from fighting each other later.

Pools for Established Central Lots

Older homes with mature landscaping and big yards can take a larger custom pool, but they need careful access planning. We build these using a conveyor for the dig and a pump truck for concrete, and we design around the trees you want to keep.

Pool and Deck Packages Built for Heat

Most Phoenix builds pair the pool with a travertine deck, which stays cooler underfoot than concrete, along with a light interior finish and variable speed equipment. A ramada or other outdoor living feature can be added to the same project.

FAQ

Custom Pools in Phoenix: Questions

Who issues pool permits in Phoenix?
The City of Phoenix Planning and Development Department issues pool and structure permits, including the barrier and pool enclosure requirements. We prepare the plans, pull the permit and coordinate inspections through final sign-off.
Can you build a pool if my side yard is too narrow for an excavator?
Usually, yes. Many older central Phoenix homes have tight side-yard access, and we handle those builds with a conveyor for excavation and a pump truck for concrete instead of heavy equipment.
Does caliche affect a pool build in Phoenix?
It can. Caliche is common throughout the city, and a hard layer can add excavation time. We plan for that possibility up front so it doesn't come as a surprise halfway through the dig.
How long does a custom pool take to build in Phoenix?
It depends on the design, the permit review and what the ground looks like once digging starts. Tight access and caliche can stretch the excavation, while a simple layout on an open lot in a newer subdivision tends to move faster.
