Pool Remodeling for Phoenix Homeowners

A lot of Phoenix pools were built when the houses around them were new, and many of those houses have now stood for decades. AZ Pool Concepts remodels existing pools across the city, from a worn interior and crusted waterline tile to a full rework that adds a spa, new lighting and a cooler deck. Owner Shawn Walker has spent more than 18 years building and remodeling pools in the Valley.

We start with a free visit to walk the pool with you. We check the finish, tap the tile, look at loose coping and open up the equipment pad, then put a written scope in front of you that separates what needs attention now from what can wait. AZ Pool Concepts is family owned and licensed with the Arizona ROC. Call (480) 241-9708 to set up a time.

Updating Older Pools in Central and North-Central Phoenix

Our Phoenix remodel work splits along the same line the city does. The central and north-central neighborhoods hold a large share of pools that are 20 to 40 years old, and those usually need the same three things: a new interior surface, fresh waterline tile, and a pump and filter that have outlived their best years. On the newer edges of the city, out toward Laveen and Estrella, most backyards are still waiting on a first pool, so remodel calls from there are less common.

Access is the practical challenge. The 1950s and 60s homes in central Phoenix sit on generous lots, but the side yards are often narrow and crowded by mature trees, which rules out heavy equipment. For a full replaster or the demolition of an old deck, we plan around that with a conveyor or a pump truck so material moves through the gate or over the wall without tearing up the landscaping.

Many older Phoenix pools are wrapped in broom-finished concrete that has cracked and gets uncomfortably hot underfoot. Replacing it with travertine at the same time as the coping lets the pool edge and the deck match. When a remodel adds a spa, a gas line or new electrical, we prepare the plans and pull the permit through the City of Phoenix Planning and Development Department, including any barrier requirements, and coordinate inspections through final. If your neighborhood has an HOA, we can put together the drawings and samples it needs for review.

Common Pool Remodeling Projects in Phoenix

Resurfacing Older Interiors

Pools in the central and north-central neighborhoods often have plaster that is rough, stained or etched after decades of hard water. We drain, prep and apply a new interior finish, usually in a lighter color suited to Phoenix sun.

Waterline Tile and Coping

Calcium builds quickly as Phoenix pool water evaporates. When the old tile is crusted beyond cleaning or the coping rocks underfoot, we replace both, repairing the bond beam underneath first so the new materials sit on a solid edge.

Travertine Deck Replacement

Trading a cracked concrete deck for travertine is one of the upgrades Phoenix homeowners ask us about most. It is easier on bare feet, and we match it to the new coping so the whole pool area reads as one finished surface.

FAQ

Pool Remodeling in Phoenix: Questions

Do I need a City of Phoenix permit to remodel my pool?
It depends on what the remodel includes. We review your scope against City of Phoenix requirements, and when a permit is needed we prepare the plans, file with the Planning and Development Department and schedule the inspections.
Can you get equipment into a central Phoenix backyard with a narrow side yard?
Yes. Tight side yards and mature trees are common in central Phoenix, so we often move material with a conveyor or pump truck instead of driving machinery through the yard.
My Phoenix pool was built decades ago. Can it still be remodeled?
In most cases, yes. If the shell is structurally sound, a new surface, tile, coping and equipment can make an older pool look and run like a current one, and we check for cracks and leaks before recommending anything.
Do you remodel pools in the newer parts of Phoenix, like North Phoenix and Laveen?
Yes. Pools in those newer subdivisions are younger, so the work there tends to be upgrades such as LED lighting, automation, water features or a new deck rather than a full resurface.
