Pool Resurfacing for Phoenix Homeowners

A lot of the pools we resurface in Phoenix were built along with the house, and in the central and north-central parts of the city that often means a shell that has held water for 20 to 40 years. By that point the plaster is usually rough on the feet, stained around the steps, and etched where sun and chemistry have worn it down. Resurfacing puts a new interior on the existing shell so the pool looks and feels right again.

AZ Pool Concepts is a family-owned contractor based in San Tan Valley, and Phoenix is a big part of our work. Owner Shawn Walker has more than 18 years in the trade, and we hold an Arizona ROC license. Every job starts with a drain and a close inspection of the shell, followed by patching, surface prep, and the finish you pick: plaster, quartz or pebble. Call (480) 241-9708 to set up a visit.

Resurfacing Older Pools in Central and North Phoenix

The older neighborhoods are where most of our Phoenix resurfacing happens. Homes from the 1950s and 60s on generous lots may have pools that were replastered once or twice already, so we sound the walls and floor for hollow spots and loose layers before anything new goes on. Mature trees are part of the charm in these yards, but they drop leaves into the water that can leave tannin stains on bright white plaster. A quartz or pebble finish in a soft color hides that kind of staining far better.

Access is the next thing to plan. Narrow side yards in central Phoenix mean the finish material is pumped by hose from the street or driveway, and we map that route during the estimate instead of figuring it out on application day. Out toward Estrella and Laveen the picture changes, since those newer subdivisions are mostly getting first pools and see far less resurfacing.

Valley water is hard, and calcium scale along the tile line is a common complaint on older pools. Pebble holds up best against hard water, and a mid-tone color shows scale less than a very dark one. Timing matters too. An empty pool sitting in July sun is hard on the shell, so we keep the gap between draining, applying the finish and refilling as short as the job allows, then balance the water carefully during startup.

Common Pool Resurfacing Projects in Phoenix

Replastering a mid-century pool

Older central Phoenix pools often have worn plaster over earlier coats. We check the shell for hollow areas, remove what is failing, patch cracks, and apply a new plaster, quartz or pebble interior suited to how your family uses the pool.

New finish and new tile

When a Phoenix pool is due for a new surface, the waterline tile is often chipped or crusted with scale as well. Replacing it while the pool is already drained avoids a second drain later and lets you choose tile and finish colors side by side.

Tight side-yard access

Narrow side yards are common in the older parts of the city. We plan hose runs, staging and cleanup around your property so the finish goes on in one steady application, with care taken around mature trees and landscaping.

FAQ

Pool Resurfacing in Phoenix: Questions

Does resurfacing a Phoenix pool need a city permit?
Requirements depend on the scope of work, so we confirm them with the City of Phoenix Planning and Development Department for your job. If a permit applies, we pull it and handle the inspections.
My pool has been replastered before. Can it be resurfaced again?
Usually, yes. We check the existing layers for hollow or loose spots and remove failing material so the new finish bonds to a sound surface.
Which finish handles Phoenix hard water best?
Pebble resists staining, etching and hard-water effects better than the other options. Quartz is a solid middle choice, and standard plaster is the budget option that shows wear sooner.
Can you resurface a pool in the middle of summer?
We do. In the hottest months we schedule the work so the shell stays empty as briefly as possible, and we watch the water chemistry closely after the refill.
