Pool Remodeling
Pool Lighting & Automation in Phoenix, AZ
In Phoenix, a lot of pool time happens after dark. Summer afternoons are often too hot to sit outside, so evenings are when families swim, and in winter the pool and spa become the view from the patio. Good lighting makes the pool usable and safer at night, and automation lets you run the whole system without walking out to the equipment pad. AZ Pool Concepts installs LED pool lighting and smart automation on existing pools around the Valley, and we design both into the new pools we build.
Older pools usually have one large incandescent or halogen light in a single wall niche. Those bulbs run hot, burn out, and throw a yellowish light that leaves corners dark. LED pool lights use much less power, last far longer, and can be set to clean white or to a range of colors and slow color shows. In many cases a new LED fixture fits the existing niche, though old wiring, a cracked niche, or a light in the wrong spot sometimes means adding a niche or rerouting conduit. Low-voltage lighting is common on updated systems, and all of the work is bonded and wired to code.
Where the lights go matters as much as the fixtures. One light at the deep end leaves the shallow end and steps in shadow, so we look at the shape of the pool and place lights to wash it evenly. Small accent lights can go in steps, Baja shelves, and benches, and lights can be added to the spa, sheer descents, and scuppers so the water features show up at night. Your interior finish changes the effect, too. A darker pebble or plaster gives deep, rich color, while a lighter finish glows brighter. We talk through how your finish will look before anything goes in, and we can coordinate pool lighting with patio and landscape lighting so the yard looks planned as a whole.
Automation ties the equipment together. A controller at the pad, paired with an app on your phone, lets you set pump speeds and schedules, start the heater before you get home, switch the lights and color modes, turn on water features, and change from pool to spa mode with valve actuators. Many automation systems can also send alerts when something needs attention, depending on the model. If you travel a lot or own a second home in the Valley, being able to check on the pool from anywhere is one of the most practical parts of the upgrade.
Arizona conditions make automation more useful than it might be elsewhere. If you're on a time-of-use plan with APS or SRP, scheduling the pump to run outside peak hours is easy to set once and leave alone. Hard freezes are rare here, but cold snaps do happen, and freeze protection that runs the pump when the air temperature drops near freezing is cheap insurance for your plumbing. Controllers and outdoor components also have to live with sun and heat, so we pay attention to where the panel is mounted and make sure your WiFi signal actually reaches the equipment pad. A system that drops its connection every afternoon isn't much of an upgrade.
We start with a free on-site look at your lights, wiring, and equipment to see what can be reused and what needs to change. Your written estimate spells out the fixtures, the controller, and any wiring or niche work. Lighting and automation pair well with nearly every other remodel project. If the pool is being drained for resurfacing, that's the easiest time to add or move light niches. New water features and a spillover spa need controls anyway, and a variable-speed pump gets the most out of a controller that can schedule its speeds. Planning everything together keeps you from paying to open the same walls and trenches twice.
